SHIPPING NOW!  Ross LTX and Gunnisons

Shipping now are the NEW Ross LTX and Gunnison Reels

The LTX:  The Ross Reels Evolution series defined the modern trout reel. Now meet the Evolution LTX: the perfect combination of original Evolution LT feel and Evolution R performance.  The ultra-smooth drag found in the Evolution LT has a long and revered history, but our engineering team took this design to the next level. The drag debuting with the LTX is over four times stronger than its predecessors’, while retaining the sound and feel that helped make the Evolution an icon.

The Gunnison:  Cutting through the Black Canyon on the Western Slope of Colorado, and only 10 miles from the Ross Reels factory, the storied Gunnison river inspired the name for one of the most iconic, reliable, and best-selling fly reels ever produced.  As a tribute to the original aesthetics, the Gunnison is designed with octagonal machining, round porting, and a leader groove on the frame. That is where the similarities part ways, as the new Gunnison represents the best in modern reel design while retaining all the reliability and ruggedness of the original.

Midland, MI (JULY 15, 2015) — Michigan-based fly line company Scientific Anglers is proud to announce the launch of its brand-new leader and tippet materials.

Researched and developed over the course of the last two years, SA’s new nylon and fluorocarbon leader and tippet materials are up to 35% stronger than their predeces- sors, built to traditional X size specifications, and come in a wide selection of lengths and sizes—up to 65lbs. in nylon and 80lbs. in fluorocarbon.

“We fully believe that we’ve developed the best materials in the industry,” said re- search and development manager Andrew Bosway. “We started over from scratch with the sole purpose of creating leaders and tippets with the strongest straight tensile and wet knot strength on the market. Based on months of data collection, testing, and on-the-water field work, we’re confident we’ve done just that.”

Manufactured using a proprietary process that removes stress during the extrusion pro- cess and reduces water absorption when used, the nylon leaders and tippets are thus able to maintain their structural integrity longer, which produces stronger tensile and wet knot breaking strengths.

The new two-pack leaders have an MSRP of $7.99 for nylon and $23.99 for fluorocarbon; the 30-meter tippets have an MSRP of $4.99 for nylon, $14.95 for fluorocarbon, and $4.99 for abrasion-resistant Hard Mono. All the new materials will be available at Scientific An- glers dealers in the fall of 2015.

(Aero)Press Release

We're very excited (and extremely caffeinated) to announce that Hart-Montgomery Outdoor Sales is the new rep group for AeroPress coffee makes in the Northern Rockies and the Pacific Northwest.

The AeroPress is an entrirely new way to make coffee.  Water and grounds are mixed together for ten seconds.  Then gentle air pressure pushes the mix through a micro-filter in 20 seconds.  The total brewing time of only 30 seconds results in exceptionally smooth flavor.  Tasters ranging from professional cuppers and caffeine addicts like Brooks Montgomery, to coffee aficionados all praise the smooth, rich flavor.

One of the greatest features is that once you've pressed your perfect cup, you unscrew the filter cap, and point the AeroPress at your garbage bin, give the plunger a whack, and all the used grounds and filter fly into the garbage as a spent hocky-puck.  No more French Press mess!

AeroPress coffee makers brew the best coffee you'vve ever had.  it is the perfect, simple, lightweight, and hassle-free way to brew coffee in the back-country, car camping, rafting, fishing, hunting camp, and it'll be all you use at home too!

Each AeroPress comes with 350 circular disc filters, the press, scoop spoon and stirring paddle.

Some praises of AeroPress:

"It makes the absolute best cup of coffee I've tasted in my entire life." - Lewis Singer - Cooks Junction

"When used properly, AeroPress produces a remarkably good straight espresso and an excellent Americano-style taller cup.  In fact, it produces a better espresso shot than many home machines that cost thenty or thirty times as much." - Kenneth Davids - Author of:  Coffee: A Guide to Buying Brewing and Enjoying, Espresso: Ultimate Coffee, Coffee Roasting: Romance and Revival and editor of coffee

"Thank you for leaving us an AeroPress.  I'm sipping a delicious Americano as I go through my emails -- you have saved me from servitude to the office brew cup and I will be forever grateful!  The funny thing is, I made it with the same pre-gournd coffee the drip stuff is made of (just to do a more direct comparison) and, well, there is no comparison -- one has flavor, the other has bitterness." - Molly Watson - Sunset Magazine

"I didn't know the same coffee could taste so good." - Peter Whitely - Sunset Magazine

"This is the first cup of coffee I've ever enjoyed without cream and sugar." - Margie Gray - Professional Engineer and coffee lover

"Thus, the result with hardly any tinkering:  Two very, very good mugs of coffee.  I was able to taste qualitites that I had mainly read about before, particularly on the floral, fruity, and sweet end of the spectrum.  You've obviusly made a fine discovery." - Jeffrey Steingarten - Vogue Food Editor

"You must try it to understand why this device is the only coffee maker I will ever own again.  Making an AeroPress coffee takes only 30 seconds (start to finish) and best of all, only takes a few seconds to clean!  The only negative aspect about the AeroPress is that I cannot drink the burnt espresso anymore  at our favorite bakery." - Ellen Jorgenson - Seattle

The Animas from Ross Reels available December 1st

The Animas River flows rough and wild through southwest Colorado.  Like its namesake, the Ross Reels Animas reel will keep running no matter what it faces.  With a custom two-tone anodized finish and solid aluminum frame components, the reel is coupled with a liquid-smooth and powerful drag system with low start-up inertia.  The drag has a tool-less, simple right-to-left hand conversion and protects even the lightest tippet, vital when demanding quarry makes blistering, unexpected runs.  The large arbor aids in retrieving all the line that just went through the tip-top.

SA Pro Staffer: Terry Myers

(This is the first of several Hart-Montgomery vignettes on women fly fishers that we are privileged to have as friends and fishing companions)

If you’ve been to the Carp Classic the last three years or so, you’ll know who Terry Myers is.  She has won the women’s division every year that she’s shown up: this last year she won it all—biggest fish of the two day tournament. To say she is an obsessed fish stalker is an understatement.  She has a sixth sense.   I think she has a lateral line.

Terry was born in Livingston Montana into a family whose father wore many hats including fishing guide on the Madison and Yellowstone rivers.  Alongside her four brothers she had little choice when it came to a childhood spent on rivers.  Terry got her guide’s license on Idaho’s Middle Fork and the Main Salmon rivers in the 70’s.

With her husband, Jerry, they owned a wilderness rafting and steelhead fishing company on the Salmon River for 22 years. I’ve known Terry and her husband Jerry for at least 30 years.  When I first met them, they always carried a rocket box with at least 30 varieties of dried animal skulls and scat that they would spread out on the evening cocktail table for their guests to ponder and identify.

They now live on a remote ranch near Salmon, Idaho where Jerry works for Trout Unlimited as the Upper Salmon project manager and Terry is the ranch manager. Whenever they get a chance they can be found exploring steelhead water from Oregon to B.C., as well as enjoying the runs out their own back door.

Terry loves to catch big fish, but more important to her is the health and never-ending protection of the wild environment that she is fishing in.  She and Jerry are role-model stewards:  ‘giving back’ to the river, to the wilderness, giving back to the local community with various charities and fund-raisers that they spearhead.  The photos accompanying this piece are taken both by Terry and Jerry Myers.

Terry is a far and fine spey caster.

Next week: Granny Currier
